Summer and winter sales in Athens

Greece has two official sales seasons a year, fixed by law: winter sales from the second Monday of January to the end of February, and summer sales from the second Monday of July to the end of August. Here are the next dates, the Sundays shops may open, your rights when you buy in the sales, how to tell a real discount from a fake one, and where to shop in Athens. Read on 4 Oct 2026.

Winter sales 2027Monday 11 January to the end of February 202728 February 2027 is a Sunday, so the last normal shopping day is likely Saturday 27 February 2027.
Summer sales 2027Monday 12 July to Tuesday 31 August 2027The second Monday of July to the end of August.
Black Friday 2026Friday 27 November 2026A shop promotion, not a legal sales period. Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November 2026.

How these dates were worked out. The 2027 dates are calculated from the legal rule (Law 4177/2013, Article 15, as rewritten by Law 4965/2022, Article 6). No announcement for 2027 from ESEE, the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship, or the Ministry of Development was found on 4 Oct 2026; we will add it when it appears.

Is there a sale on now?

No official sales period is left in 2026. The winter sales ran from Monday 12 January to Saturday 28 February 2026 and the summer sales from Monday 13 July to Monday 31 August 2026. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are shop promotions, not legal sales periods, and the previous price rule still applies to them.

Sundays when shops may open

Shops in Greece usually close on Sundays. The law lets them open on the first Sunday of each sales period, the second Sunday of the winter sales, the Sunday after the last Friday of November, the two Sundays before Christmas, Palm Sunday and the last Sunday of the year. Opening is up to each shop, within 11:00 to 20:00.

  • Sunday 29 November 2026 Sunday after the last Friday of November (after Black Friday). Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 13 December 2026 First of the two Sundays before Christmas. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 20 December 2026 Second of the two Sundays before Christmas. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 27 December 2026 Last Sunday of the year. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 17 January 2027 First Sunday of the winter sales. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 24 January 2027 Second Sunday of the winter sales. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 25 April 2027 Palm Sunday (Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027). Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 18 July 2027 First Sunday of the summer sales. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.

  • Sunday 19 December 2027 Second of the two Sundays before Christmas. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.
  • Sunday 26 December 2027 Last Sunday of the year, but 26 December is a public holiday, so under the holiday clause this opening may move; check nearer the time. Shops choose whether to open, within 11:00 to 20:00.

The 2026 Sundays are as listed by e-HowTo.gr (updated 23 Sep 2026) and match the legal rule; the 2027 Sundays are calculated from the rule. Sunday 26 December 2027 is also a public holiday, so that opening may move: check nearer the time.

Christmas shopping hours

Not published as of 4 Oct 2026. Last year the Athens Traders Association's suggested festive hours were reported on 18 Nov 2025. Each shop sets its own hours within the legal frame: Monday to Saturday 06:00 to 21:00, and the permitted Sundays 11:00 to 20:00. The Athens Traders Association published its suggested festive hours for 2025 on 18 Nov 2025, so expect the 2026 schedule in the second half of November.

Your rights in the sales

  1. During the sales every price cut must show the previous price beside the new one. The cut may also be shown as a percentage or a euro amount, and the previous price may be struck through.
  2. The previous price is the lowest price the shop charged in the 30 days before the cut. If the product has been on sale for less than 30 days, it is the lowest price since it went on sale. This is the EU Omnibus rule (Directive 2019/2161), now in Article 9i of Greek Law 2251/1994.
  3. If a shop cuts a price in steps within 60 days, it may keep showing the price from before the first cut, but any price rise in between ends this.
  4. The recommended retail price may not be used as the previous price.
  5. Shops may not charge extra for paying by card.
  6. Buying in the sales does not reduce your rights if an item is faulty: you can ask for repair, replacement, a price reduction or a refund, depending on the case. The EU legal guarantee lasts at least two years, and for a fault that appears within a year of delivery the seller must prove it was not there at delivery.
  7. Exchanging or refunding an item that is not faulty is the shop's own policy, not a legal duty. The shop should tell you its policy before you pay, so ask first and keep the receipt.
  8. Online and phone purchases from a business come with 14 days to change your mind, counted from delivery, with exceptions such as personalised goods. A purchase made in a shop is in principle final.
  9. To complain, call the Ministry of Development consumer line 1520, email 1520@mindev.gov.gr or use the online complaint form of the General Secretariat of Commerce. The line answers daily from 08:00 to 22:00 (search engine copy, not confirmed on the Ministry site).
  10. The Consumer Ombudsman, an independent authority, also takes consumer complaints through its official website. For a problem with a seller in another EU country, the European Consumer Centre in your country can help.

How to check a real discount

The struck through price must be the lowest price the shop charged in the 30 days before the cut, so a price raised just before a sale and then cut does not count as a real discount. Before you buy, look up the price history on a comparison site:

  • Skroutz price history: A price history button on each product page shows how the price has moved, with a graph of the lowest and average price and the number of shops selling the item. The 2012 post that introduced it describes a four month graph.
  • Skroutz price alert: You set the price you want and Skroutz lets you know when the item reaches it.
  • Skroutz deals page: Lists products with price drop labels; sponsored entries carry an Ad label.
  • BestPrice deal checks: BestPrice compares each price with the lowest stable price of the last three months and with every shop selling the same product. It ignores very short drops and price errors, leaves out products without enough history, and shows a deal badge for 30 days at most. Its strictest badge, Black deals, marks a new lowest price. The struck through price is BestPrice's own reference price, not the shop's claim, shops cannot buy a badge, and one click opens the price history graph.
  • BestPrice deals page: Deals of the day picked by the BestPrice team, with price history graphs.
  • e-shop.gr Crazy Sundays: Shows the lowest price of the previous 30 days next to each deal.

Did you know

Before Black Friday 2025 the Consumer Ombudsman warned about discounts worked out from prices raised just beforehand, unclear product descriptions, hidden charges and delivery costs, late deliveries and untrustworthy websites. It advised shoppers to check the previous price and the price history, read the return terms, pay securely and not be rushed by short flash offers. ESEE reminded shops that the previous price for a Black Friday cut is the lowest price of the previous 30 days.

The rules behind it

  • Sales periods. Law 4177/2013, Article 15, as rewritten by Law 4965/2022 (FEK A 162/2022), Article 6: two regular sales periods a year, winter from the second Monday of January to the end of February and summer from the second Monday of July to the end of August.
  • No more mid season sales. Abolished in 2022 by Law 4965/2022. The May and November mid season sales that appear in the original 2013 text no longer exist.
  • Previous price. Every price cut must state the previous price, meaning the lowest price in the 30 days before the cut: Article 9i of Law 2251/1994 as amended by Law 5111/2024, following Article 6a of Directive 98/6/EC as added by Directive (EU) 2019/2161.
  • Sundays. Law 4177/2013, Article 16(1), as amended by Law 5157/2024 (FEK A 187/15.11.2024), Article 39: shops may open on the first Sunday of each sales period, the second Sunday of the winter sales, the Sunday after the last Friday of November, the two Sundays before Christmas, Palm Sunday and the last Sunday of the year. If one of these falls on an official holiday, the opening moves to the next Sunday that is not a holiday. Opening is optional, within 11:00 to 20:00.

  • The 2027 sales dates are calculated from the legal rule. No ESEE or Ministry of Development announcement for 2027 was found on 4 Oct 2026.
  • End of winter sales 2027: the law says the end of February. 28 February 2027 is a Sunday that is not a permitted Sunday, so the last normal shopping day is likely Saturday 27 February, as coolweb.gr says (search engine copy). Not confirmed officially.
  • Sunday 26 December 2027 is both the last Sunday of the year and a public holiday. Under the holiday clause this opening may move to another Sunday; not checked.
  • December 2026 festive shop hours are not published yet. Only the Athens Traders Association's 2025 schedule was found, as a reference.
  • The current consolidated text of Articles 15 and 16 of Law 4177/2013 was not read on an official site; the codified version on e-nomothesia needs a subscription. The rules come from the ESEE circular, the Volos Traders Association copy of Law 4965/2022 and the Odigos tou Politi copy of Law 5157/2024, Article 39.
  • Law 5111/2024 itself was not read; the 30 day and 60 day rules come from the ESEE circular of 25 Jun 2026.
  • The 1520 line hours (daily 08:00 to 22:00) come from a Cyclades Chamber page in search engine copy, not from the Ministry.
  • No Ministry of Development or Consumer Ombudsman guidance for Black Friday 2026 was found yet; the warnings used date from November 2025.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026 dates come from Greek news sites in search engine copy; they match the calendar (US Thanksgiving is 26 Nov 2026).
  • Skroutz price history details come from a 2012 blog post, so the graph span and layout may have changed. The Skroutz price alert is from search engine copy.
  • Offers pages for Plaisio, Germanos, e-shop.gr, IKEA, Skroutz and BestPrice were last read on 3 Oct 2026; Public and Kotsovolos were opened again on 4 Oct 2026; attica, notos and Hondos Center are from search engine copy.
