The Acropolis and its Slopes
The one thing nobody skips. Entry is by timed slot and the ticket also covers the slopes, the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus from the outside. Go at opening or in the last two hours; the middle of the day in summer is punishing and crowded.

Filopappou Hill at Golden Hour
The Acropolis view without the ticket, from the pine covered hill directly opposite. Paved paths, benches and the Philopappos monument at the top. Best in the hour before sunset, and it is a ten minute walk from Thisio metro.

Sunday morning is when the market spreads out properly, along Ifestou and around Avissynias Square. Free to walk, and the covered arcades give you somewhere to go when the weather turns.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
The single best source of free things to do in Athens and it runs all year. Open air film screenings on the Great Lawn, yoga and pilates in the park, a running club, kayaking on the canal, chess, children's workshops, guided tours and the dancing fountains. Most of it is free, some needs a free booking in advance.

Lycabettus Hill
The highest point in central Athens, with the whole basin and the Acropolis below it. Walking up costs nothing and takes about half an hour from Kolonaki; the funicular is charged. Sunset is the obvious time and also the busiest.

Aegina on the Ordinary Ferry
The cheapest island day out from Athens. The scheduled ferry from Piraeus costs a fraction of the organised three island cruise and leaves you free to choose your own day: the Temple of Aphaia, the pistachio stalls on the harbour front, and a swim at Agia Marina.
